I like how you used the word “beg.” You only beg if someone has something you want. It also shows power. Will social media be enough to upset the flow of power?

The Marin Independent Journal, my local paper, @marinij, has been on Twitter for nearly a year. I liked the guy, so when we had a mountain lion attack, I tweeted him with the info before it became public. I’ve tweeted him several times with breaking stories before they hit the paper. Because he is there, he’s friendly and he interacts. Very different from today’s begging.

Exactly. There are a few who use it to interact. Otherwise, they just use it to exploit. I would love to see some producers who use Twitter on a day-to-day basis, becomes friends with the people she follows, and then when they do have something they need to query the community for, they will more likely be promoted. Not sure if the MSM knows anything other than exploitation–you know, playing with fears, adding drama, etc., and then trying to pass it off as factual!

Funniest thing, after that, all the TV News stations got Twitter accounts and tweeted: PLEASE send us exclusive video of plane going down in Hudson! They know they got scooped and were looking for more photos and any footage to come thru them! Now, of course they got scooped, they aren’t set up for interacting with the global world, like Social Media is. But its funny to see them enter the social media world and BEG for exclusives.
